The recipients of the College of Applied Health Sciences’ Distinguished Alumni Award and the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services’ Harold Scharper Achievement Award will be honored in a ceremony on October 12, 2018, in the Khan Annex of Huff Hall.

Dr. Tara Scanlan

This year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient is Tara Scanlan, professor emerita and research professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Scanlan completed all three of her degrees in Physical Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The founding director of the International Center for Talent Development, Dr. Scanlan’s research focuses on the commitment of youth through world class athletes and their experiences of stress, enjoyment, and passion. Her interview research of elite figure skaters in the 1980s was the first demonstration of qualitative methods being used for scientific purposes in the field of sport psychology.
