Aira On Demand Description Service
Aira assistive technology for the Blind & Low Vision is available to students at the University of Illinois and provides an on-demand description service through a smart phone application. Illinois is an Aira access location for Blind and Low-Vision students and anyone else physically on campus who have installed the app on their smartphone. Anyone, including students, can use the service at no cost while physically on campus.
For more information:
- Go to the Aira website.
- Call the customer support line at 800-835-1934 and mention "Campus Network".
The service connects people with blindness or low vision with a sighted agent to help with visual tasks that are either impossible or very difficult to do without sighted assistance. Live descriptions include navigating streets, buildings, and all print materials. The first five minutes of any call from any location off-campus is free. There are other ways to get help free, such as the first 30 minutes of the call when an internet platform is not screen-reader accessible.
Most importantly, using Aira is always free from locations on the University of Illinois campus. Start enjoying more productivity, engagement with the visual world and more independence today!
