EquatIO

Downloading Programs

EquatIO is available for free for anyone with an @illinois.edu account from the webstore.
Download the program at  https://webstore.illinois.edu/home/

MathType is required to be installed on your computer for EquateIO to work.
MathType is available through the Webstore for free for all College of Engineering faculty, staff, and students.  $49.95/yearly license for all other users.

Install MathType and EquateIO on your system before starting.

Running EquatIO

  1. Open the original PDF file AND Go to Program List and Open EquatIO
  2. Select Microsoft
  3. Enter your university email and select Work or School Account
  4. Enter your university email address and password
  5. Verify using Two-Factor Authentication.

If this is the first time using EquatIO, you should see the following pop-up:

Select Create a MathType equation and Remember my choice

Select Create a MathType equation and check the box Remember my choice.

Select OK.

Your screen will have the EquatIO overlay that will look like this:

Menu icons

At the bottom of the screen there is a Tool Bar (numbers were added to explain the menu)

  1. Equation Editor
  2. LaTex Editor
  3. Handwriting Recognition
  4. Speech Input
  5. Graph Editor
  6. EquatIO Mobile
  7. Screenshot Reader
  8. Edit Math
  9. Insert Math

Open the Blue EquatIO Menu at the bottom left:

Select Options > Math Options.
(PDF file and Word file must be on same monitor)

  1. Under Prediction, enable Math, Chemistry, and Formulas then select Save.
  2. Locate the equation to be copied or converted
  3. Select the Screenshot Reader (this was icon #7, the dotted line square with an arrow), and draw a box around the equation.

Three icons will appear at the top right.

  • The arrow/box starts/stops spoken math
  • The three dots opens output menu
  • The X closes the options
  1. Select the icon with the three dots and then select the format that the equation should be saved in.
  2. Paste into the document where the equation should appear. (Ctrl-V)
  3. Select the X icon to close the window and to move to the next equation.
  4. Save your file when you are finished.

  1. Paste into the document where the equation should appear.
  2. Select  “x” to close the window and move to the next equation.
  3. Save the Word file when complete.
