Downloading Programs
EquatIO is available for free for anyone with an @illinois.edu account from the webstore.
Download the program at https://webstore.illinois.edu/home/
MathType is required to be installed on your computer for EquateIO to work.
MathType is available through the Webstore for free for all College of Engineering faculty, staff, and students. $49.95/yearly license for all other users.
Install MathType and EquateIO on your system before starting.
Running EquatIO
- Open the original PDF file AND Go to Program List and Open EquatIO
- Select Microsoft
- Enter your university email and select Work or School Account
- Enter your university email address and password
- Verify using Two-Factor Authentication.
If this is the first time using EquatIO, you should see the following pop-up:
Select Create a MathType equation and check the box Remember my choice.
Select OK.
Your screen will have the EquatIO overlay that will look like this:

At the bottom of the screen there is a Tool Bar (numbers were added to explain the menu)
- Equation Editor
- LaTex Editor
- Handwriting Recognition
- Speech Input
- Graph Editor
- EquatIO Mobile
- Screenshot Reader
- Edit Math
- Insert Math
Open the Blue EquatIO Menu at the bottom left:
Select Options > Math Options.
(PDF file and Word file must be on same monitor)
- Under Prediction, enable Math, Chemistry, and Formulas then select Save.
- Locate the equation to be copied or converted
- Select the Screenshot Reader (this was icon #7, the dotted line square with an arrow), and draw a box around the equation.
Three icons will appear at the top right.
- The arrow/box starts/stops spoken math
- The three dots opens output menu
- The X closes the options
- Select the icon with the three dots and then select the format that the equation should be saved in.
- Paste into the document where the equation should appear. (Ctrl-V)
- Select the X icon to close the window and to move to the next equation.
- Save your file when you are finished.

- Paste into the document where the equation should appear.
- Select “x” to close the window and move to the next equation.
- Save the Word file when complete.
