SensusAccess Text Conversion Tool

Alternate media made easy


SensusAccess is a text conversion tool that allows students, faculty, staff and alumni (Illinois.edu email address) to automatically convert documents into a range of alternate media including audio books (MP3 and DAISY), e-books (EPUB, EPUB3 and Mobi) and digital Braille. The service can also be used to convert inaccessible documents such as image-only PDF files, JPG pictures and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations into more accessible and less tricky formats.

SensusAccess offers four different types of services:

Accessibility: Original inaccessible documents such as image files in TIFF, image-only PDF, JPG, BMP, GIF, PCX, JP2, as well as all types of PDF files can be converted to more accessible formats including tagged PDF, DOC, DOCX, WORD XML, XLS, XLSX, CVS, text, RTF and HTML.  Microsoft Office docs can be converted into tagged pdf. Microsoft Powerpoint can be converted into RTF files and web-projects.

E-book Services: Documents can be converted to EPUB, EPUB3, EPUB3 with media overlays and Mobi (Amazon Kindle) e-book formats.  EPUB can be also be converted to Mobi and vice versa.  Text can be scaled to accommodate users with low vision for an e-book reader.

Audio Services: Conversion into plain MP3 files as well as Daisy Talking Books and spoken math. The audio conversion features currently include high-quality voices for Arabic, Arabic/English bilingual, Bulgarian, British and American English, Danish, Dutch, German, Greenlandic, French, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovenian, and Castilian and Latin American Spanish.

Braille Services: Transcription of documents to and from contracted and uncontracted Braille in accordance with the Braille codes for Bulgarian, Danish, British English, American English, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovenian and Spanish. The documents can furthermore be formatted and paginated, and delivered as ready-to-emboss files in a variety of digital Braille formats.

Because files are being sent over the internet, there is a risk that user provided information could be inadvertently disclosed to others.  We recommended that confidential materials not be converted with SensusAccess.
