With his education and training in kinesiology, biomechanics, and adapted sports medicine, Dr. Hanks’ research in the Disability and Movement Biomechanics Laboratory aims to determine the role of physical activity on shoulder musculoskeletal health and function in manual wheelchair users and wheelchair athletes. He is also interested in evaluating upper extremity biomechanics in adapted and traditional, overhead sports and quantifying motion of individuals with various mobility impairments as a consequence of aging and disability. Dr. Hanks graduated with a B.S. in Athletic Training from the University of Michigan and an M.Ed. in Exercise Science and a Ph.D. in Kinesiology from Auburn University. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is a Certified Athletic Trainer with prior sports medicine experience with youth, collegiate, and Paralympic athletes.
