Florencia Romero

What year are you in your program?

I am a second year Master of Health Administration student.

What keeps you busy outside of your coursework?

I enjoy volunteering in my community. This has recently been a challenge because of COVID-19. Previously, I have enjoyed volunteering as an English as a Second Language Tutor.

What inspired you to pursue a MHA degree?

My family, friends and community. Growing up I saw many people around me struggle to afford good health care services. I initially wanted to become a doctor as I entered undergrad but once I took a health care systems course at Illinois, I knew I could do more to help people access quality health care. After working in health care settings for a few years, I felt that a Master’s in Health Administration would help me pursue my goals of creating a more accessible and affordable health care system in the U.S.

Why did you choose Illinois for your MHA?

I chose the MHA program at Illinois because of the curriculum, faculty and opportunities at the University of Illinois. I attended UIUC as an undergraduate and thoroughly enjoyed my classes, chatting with my professors and advisors, and being a part of unique research opportunities. I also spoke with alumni and knew that attending this program would be a great choice.

What advice do you have for current students OR prospective students?

Be open to new opportunities – whether that be a new volunteer opportunity, research opportunity or career. Keep an open mind in order to find something you love to do.
