Student Advising Services

MPH students receive support and mentorship from a multi-faceted student advising system.

  • Academic advising: Students meet with the Assistant Director at least once per semester (and as often as desired) for assistance with course registration, assistance with APE and ILE, and general assistance with the program.
  • Faculty advising: Student are assigned a faculty mentor based on their identified interests. The faculty advisor is there to help build 1:1 connections with faculty. Faculty advisors can also assist in helping students find research or practice opportunities, ideas for Applied Practice Experience (APE) and Integrated Learning Experience (ILE) placements, and career support.
  • Career advising: Students receive career-related support in a professional development seminar course and 1:1. This includes assistance with developing resumes and cover letters, looking for jobs, practicing for interviews, and negotiating job offers. Each student will meet 1:1 with a career coach to allow for a customized experience tailoring job search tools to meet the student’s topic matter interest and skill set. Students also have access to the University-wide career support services from The Career Center.
  • Practice mentorship: During the Applied Practice Experience (APE), each student will work in a community organization gaining hands-on public health practice experience. Each student will have a Preceptor, a supervisor, and a mentor from the organization that helps the student develop as a professional as well as hone their public health practice skills.
