Kennedy Campbell, a pre-med student majoring in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, and Recreation, Sport and Tourism major Sydney Brown were among the students featured in a recent episode of “The College Tour.” The series, which can be found on Amazon Prime, tells the story of campus life, academics, housing, sports, student activities, and more through the experiences of students.

Kennedy, a first-generation college student from the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, talks about how her extensive involvement in professional, cultural, and social activities on campus is helping her pursue a career in medicine. Sydney and his identical twin brother Chase, both members of the Fighting Illini football team, talk about what they are learning through their involvement in Big 10 sports and how it helps them prepare for the future.

Kennedy described her “College Tour” experience as “amazing.” “I was so excited and couldn’t believe that I was given this opportunity,” she said. “As a first-generation college student, it was so important for me to share my story and inspire the next generation of Illini.”

After being nominated to participate in the program by faculty members, students complete an application that includes a video. If they get through to the next round, they interview with representatives of the University of Illinois Admissions Office and The College Tour. Kennedy’s segment was filmed at the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center, where she volunteers as a Shelley Ambassador. Her involvement led to both television and radio interviews.

Kennedy says her family was with her every step of the way. “My family was so supportive and just ecstatic, really,” she said. “They actually threw a party for me!”
