National Career Day for Military-Connected Populations

The Chez Veterans Center at the University of Illinois, following up on its 2020 study, Veterans in the Labor Market: Experiences of the Post 9/11 Generation, will host a national, virtual career fair for military-connected individuals.

The event, to be held via the Brazen Technology platform on April 8th from 1-5 p.m. CT, is open to all Post-9/11 active and reserve/national guard service members, veterans, and military spouses and partners.

In November 2020, a research team led by the Chez Veterans Center in the College of Applied Health Sciences and the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois completed a comprehensive, national study on Veteran employment with the post-9/11 generation. The researchers reported on veteran satisfaction in the job market, factors influencing employment, best practices for career fairs and key recommendations for employers, policy makers, and veterans. As a way to translate this research into impact, this virtual career fair will implement the findings of best practices for hosting a Veteran career fair generated from the study.

Employers at the virtual career fair—which is sponsored by Uber and BP—have been encouraged to offer paid internships or full-time jobs with benefits and family-sustaining wages. Twenty-five employers are expected to have virtual booths, including Amazon, Google, Union Pacific, Northrop Grumman Corp., the University of Illinois, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Fermilab, American Systems, United States Geological Survey and Sandia National Laboratories.

Brazen’s platform allows job-seekers to upload their resume and sort through and filter the virtual employer booths to find the opportunities and companies that are most important to them. Once they do, job seekers can choose what companies they want to meet with by adding their name to a waiting list for a particular company. When job seekers are in a company’s virtual booth, they will be able to ask recruiters questions by video or through a chat. Employers have real-time access to resumes, and the Brazen platform was designed with accessibility needs in mind.
