- Born and raised in Champaign, Illinois
- Attended the University of Illinois where he received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in geography
- Attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a master’s degree and doctoral degree in demography, plus an MPH degree in epidemiology
- Professor of preventive medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch for 10 years
- Research epidemiologist working with viral diseases at CDC for 10 years
- Field epidemiologist at WHO for 15 years, focused primarily on prevention and control of viral disease outbreaks
- Worked and lived in Haiti, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, Barbados, Sint Maarten, India, Malaysia, and Nepal (plus a few other places)
